Tips on Getting Involved in Celebrating Arbor Day
Make decisions that matter when it comes to healthy trees in your town, city, or county. Support your public works/parks department. Here's how:
- Understand more about urban planning with trees in mind. The Georgia Model Urban Forest Book has been created to help communities better understand, preserve, plant, and maintain trees and forests as green infrastructure in an urban environment.
- Have your public works/parks department attend an ongoing series of workshops presented by the Georgia Urban Forest Council. Workshops include topics like basic tree care work. For more information, please visit www.gufc.org.
- Take a leadership role to ensure that your budget supports the health and care of parks, trees, and greenspace in your town, city, or county. To assist in budgeting, competitive funding is available for local governments and nonprofit organizations looking to improve their community forests through the Urban & Community Forestry Grant Program .
- Start the process of developing or reviewing your tree ordinance. The Tree Ordinance Development Guidebook is available from the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC). You can also call the GFC at 800-GA-TREES for one-on-one guidance from an urban forester.
- Become a Tree City USA town, city, or county. You will already be eligible, if you host an Arbor Day event in your town, city, or county; issue a Proclamation for Arbor Day; and create a tree budget and tree ordinance.
