Urban & Community Forestry Grant

Grant funds are provided on a yearly basis by the USDA Forest Service and the program is administered by the Georgia Forestry Commission in cooperation with the Georgia Urban Forest Council.  Funding is awarded to communities across the state of Georgia for projects that stimulate and enhance urban and community forest resources.

Grant Application and Guidelines

The 2008 U&CF Grant cycle is now closed. The 2008 Application and Guidelines below are for reference only.


Grant Timeline

Milestones for the 2008 grant cycle are:

  • Grant workshops in late March and early-mid April
  • Grant applications/proposals due on May 9, 2008
  • Grant awards determined and recipients notified in mid to late July
  • Grant projects begin on September 1, 2008 and must be completed by August 31, 2009

  • Tree Ordinances/policies
  • Tree Advocacy/advisory organizations

Grant Objectives (Back to top)

  • Improve understanding of the benefits of tree cover in communities.
  • Encourage owners of private residences and commercial properties to maintain trees and expand forest cover on their properties.
  • Provide educational programs and technical assistance to communities and state and local organizations in maintaining forested lands and individual trees in urban and community settings and identify appropriate tree species and sites for expanding forest cover.
  • Promote volunteerism, multi-cultural awareness, and involvement of nonprofit organizations, agencies, and the private sector in implementing urban and community forestry programs.
  • Develop sustainable urban forestry programs at the local level.
  • Improve strategic community forestry planning efforts of city administrators, municipal tree departments and tree boards.
  • Enhance the technical skills of individuals involved in planning development and maintenance of urban and community forests.
  • Expand opportunities for urban forestry research.

Eligibility (Back to top)

The following types of organizations are eligible for funding:

  • Units of local governments (city, town, county)*
  • Nonprofit organizations,
  • Educational institutions
  • Neighborhood associations
  • Civic groups
  • Community tree groups

*Units of local government must be a designated Qualified Local Government as outlined in the Georgia Planning Act of 1989.

Grant Workshops (Back to top) 

For more information about the grant program and techniques for submitting a successful application, please attend a grant workshop. Workshops will be held at various locations across the state in late March and early to mid April.
