Outreach Programs - Hightower Educational Forest
During the winter months, the weather is not as favorable for outside activities. Therefore, we would like to come to you. Below is a listing of programs that can be provided in your classroom. They are primarily from the Project Learning Tree curriculum, an award-winning environmental education program. Programs last 30 – 50 minutes with all necessary materials provided. There is no charge.

1. Tree Factory and Tree Lifecycle – 30 min.; Grades: 2-3
By acting out the parts of a tree, your students will see how a tree works like a factory. The lifecycle of a tree is explored by personifying a tree’s growth.
2. Water Wonders/Water Cycle – 45 min.; Grades: 4-8
This activity will introduce students to the various steps of the water cycle and to the various paths water can take. They will also make connections between the water cycle and all living things.
3. Forest For the Trees – 30 min.; Grades: 4-8
In this activity, students will role-play managing a tree farm. By using a piece of land as a tree farm, they will begin to understand the economic factors that influence management decisions for private forest lands.
4. Living With Fire/Fire Tag – 40 min.; Grades: 2-8
Students will learn the components of fire, as well as techniques to manage fire through a demonstration experiment and a game.
5. Endangered Species/Life on the Edge – 45 min.; Grades: 4-8
Students will learn how habitat destruction affects animal species in increasing competition and crowding. A slide presentation will introduce students to some of the threatened and endangered species in Georgia.
6. We All Need Trees – 30 min.; Grades: 3-6
It is easy to see that items made of wood come from trees. However, many tree products are not obvious. In this activity your students will discover the diversity and multitude of products that are in some way derived from trees.
7. Every Tree For Itself/Tree Cookies – 30 min.; Grades: K-8
This activity gives students an idea of the conditions that trees need to live and grow, and helps students understand that trees must often compete for their needs.
8. Renewable or Not? – 40 min.; Grades: 4-8
Students will learn what renewable and nonrenewable resources are, and discover why sustainable use of natural resources is so important.
9. Story time – 30 min.; Grades: K-3
Different stories and books about the forest introduce students to forest uses such as products, wildlife, recreation, and beauty.
