Wildfire Prevention

The Georgia Forestry Commission professionals are active in promoting wildfire prevention to the public. This has traditionally taken place in the form of Smokey Bear educational programs in schools, civic club gatherings and other public events such as fairs and expos. This type of education will continue to take place as Georgia’s population continues to grow and the need for wildfire prevention becomes ever more important.

The emphasis on wildfire prevention has shifted somewhat by taking fire prevention a step further in educating that segment of the population responsible for human caused fires. This deals more with the adult population. Statistics show that the adult population is responsible for more fires than children.  The Georgia Forestry Commission’s mission in fire prevention is to reach these adult burners as well.

The GFC has targeted 32 Georgia counties experiencing the most wildfires with the goal of reducing the number of human caused fires in these counties. Most of these fires are caused by careless debris burning which is the number one cause of wildfire in Georgia.

A billboard program has been initiated for high fire occurrence counties. These billboards deal with subjects such as debris burning, wildland urban interface, and arson.

Our roadside sign campaign continues to dot the landscape with messages about wildfire prevention and prescribed burning.

If interested in a wildfire prevention program contact your local GFC Ranger.
