GFC URGES TREE SEEDLING ORDERS BEFORE SOLD OUT

The Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) urges buyers to order tree seedlings now due to the probability of numerous species being sold out for the 2005 planting season.

Russ Pohl, GFC Chief of Reforestation, said some species sell out early due to increasing demand and short supply.  “The usual rush to buy seedlings starts in September,” Pohl said, “but we still have a good supply of slash and loblolly pine – and some hardwood species.”

Planting season for slash and loblolly pines can begin as early as mid-November (depending on weather).  Hardwoods should be planted in January and February.  Any purchaser of GFC seedlings may receive a full refund until November 15, 2004.  All requests for refunds must be in writing and postmarked by November 14.

“Ordering seedlings is easy,” Pohl said.  “Just contact your local Georgia Forestry Commission office and ask for a seedling order form.  They will answer any questions you have related to planting and tree species. The application takes only about three minutes to fill out -- then just drop your application and check in the mail to reserve your supply.”

Applications and price listings may also be obtained by calling 1-800-GA-TREES or visit the Georgia Forestry Commission website at www.gatrees.org.
